Extra-curricular activities are an excellent way for students to discover other talents that they may have, unrelated to the usual school curriculum. By encouraging students to get involved with activities outside of academia, they have more opportunities to develop skills that are fundamental for college and working life. Communication skills, team skills and public speaking are just some of the benefits of participating in an extra-curricular school program.

Although extra-curricular school program are highly beneficial for pupils who are keen to be accepted by  colleges, they are equally as important for students who are not as academically inclined. Pupils who have had behavioral problems, self-esteem issues or do not have the same level of interest in pursuing an academic path can hugely benefits from extra-curricular activities. Being successful and achieving goals through sporting activities or creative endeavours can promote pupils self-esteem and sense of self-worth.

Overall, it is essential that schools embrace a well-rounded, extra-curricular program to encourage all of their pupils to have the best possible chance at succeeding in later life.

The concept of predictive analytics simply put, is beginning with the end in mind.  It can help hiring managers as well as principals to streamline the hiring process. Rather then relying on school leaders to be able to spot teaching talent via the normal interview process, this concept relies on a more studied and statistical method that predicts the impact a teacher will have on student growth.

The research-based hiring process concept is a multi-step interview process that scores candidates on how they align with key characteristics.

A better interviewing process can:

  • Flag problems before some one is hired determine if the teacher is a good fit for the school
  • Teachers know the expectation upfront.
  • Collect data to allow the school to seamlessly determine and prioritize the list of candidates

Structured interviews are more reliable than the typical unstructured interviews.   Predictive research helps identify teachers who are most likely to be effective with the students and remain with the organization. A research-based hiring process must define what methods and procedures are used to determine teacher effectiveness and whether it is adequately defined to achieve the expected outcome.

One attribute of a high achieving school is the presence of high quality teaching and learning for every student every day.  In order for this to occur, there must be capable teachers who understand and monitor their impact on learning. Teacher effectiveness has recently captured the forefront as the most important avenue of an education reform. It has been realized that high performing schools must hire and maintain the best teachers as academic progress of the students depends heavily on the talent and skills of the teacher leading their classroom.

Schools can choose to control the quality of their teaching force by recruiting quality teachers, which can be addressed by the implementation of an effective teacher screening process.

There are several benefits of flipped instruction:

  • Students can catch up more easily—in the case of illness and absence students do not fall as far behind when they can access pertinent content from home New knowledge is more easily assimilated when it is actively constructed, and making students more responsible in their own learning process enables this acquisition to take place. The student-teacher interaction becomes more personalized, allowing the student to receive the specific instruction they need rather than an overview, which may leave them confused.

There are some limitations to flipped instruction. It places students without access to the relevant technology at a disadvantage. While this can be ameliorated by having technology in place in the schools, it does not bridge the gap completely, as schools are not accessible twenty-four hours a day. If most of the instruction takes place by video, it still doesn’t benefit students who do not learn easily by listening to lectures, and it may place an extra workload on teachers, who are tasked to create high-quality content.

Students who do not already take responsibility in their learning process may fall even further behind, as most information transfer is self-directed. If you can find solutions to these potential problems, the benefits may outweigh the risks.

When compared in several studies, flipped classrooms outperformed traditional classrooms each time, dropping the failure rate, raising the grade average, graduation rate, and college attendance rate.

  • About Laurie Kimbrel

    The current project manager for the Atlanta K-12 Design Challenge, Laurie Kimbrel is an educator with many years’ experience. Before undertaking this position in 2015, Kimbrel served as Superintendent of the Tamalpais Union High School District in Larkspur, California, where she oversaw 4,200 students, 435 staff members, and managed a $63 million budget. Among other achievements under Laurie Kimbrel’s tenure, the district implemented a leadership model that formed Professional Learning Communities designed to augment teacher effectiveness through shared assessment data.

    Kimbrel holds a bachelor of science in music and business from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. She also received a master of science in special education from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, and completed her education with leadership-based doctoral studies at Loyola University in Chicago.

    Dedicated to her community, Laurie Kimbrel is a hospice volunteer and works with nonprofits aimed at ensuring every child has access to great teachers and schools. She is also passionate about education reform and champions efforts to bring about effective hiring practices in schools.
